PRESERVATION OF THE AGRO-ECOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENT IN SENEGAL

Sustainable Development: An absolute priority

The Compagnie Sucrière Sénégalaise (CSS) has established a research and development program for Organic products: Bio-Pesticides and Bio-fertilizers designed to replace the products currently used and to increase the yields of the sugar cane.

Molasses, bagasse, vinasse and scum, by-products of the distillery process transformed into bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides for distribution throughout the country.

The CSS also uses biological control products as well as organic and mineral fertilizers to meet the needs of its plantation in a better respect for the environment. The results of this research are showing and improvement of the yield in the treated plots.

CLEAN DEVELOPMENT MECHANISM (CDM)

The CSS has also decided to make an investment, estimated at 30 million Euros, to reduce its fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissionsThis reduction requires a better use of biomass, including bagasse produced by grinding sugar cane in its factory, and used as fuel to generate electricity.

The company has chosen to include this innovative project for Senegal in the program of the Clean Development Mechanism. Thus, it will benefit from carbon credits that with further commercialization should help make new investments in the development of other biomass residues.
